ABOUT ME

Katrin Kruse Basel

I coach, and I write. I am intrigued by how we live our lives. How we choose to live, and more often, how we don’t choose, but rather live by default. Where does this default come from – and how can we shift it into something self created? Essentially, it is about inner freedom. More precise: about making freedom real. That’s what I work with.

Freedom, to me, equaled being a free thinker for quite a while. I spent a super conceptual decade of critical theory and gender studies in academia, worked as a journalist in Berlin and later as an editor in Zurich. When I started teaching at art universities, coaching graduate students in their work, something shifted: thinking became embodied, and concepts became practices.

Coaching is like a cartography. In just a few moments, you learn about someone’s central notions, sense the coordinates they stand in, and the emotional tone of their inner world. This cartography, I realised, is foundational: in the creative process, yes, but more so in life. The self is a practice, not a ready made entity. I wanted to learn more, deepen my method, and so I started a somatic coaching training in California.

Here’s what I learned, and what is the foundation of my work since: Owning your mind doesn’t mean much without radical somatic presence. Yes, inner freedom requires the ability go radically meta – to own your concepts, to transcend paradigms. Yet – it also requires the ability to be fully embodied. It needs both. And it needs both at the same time. This is how I work.

Vita: I am a certified somatic Coach with a private practice, working with clients online internationally as well as in person in Berne, Switzerland. I studied critical theory, gender studies and literature in Berlin and London and have an MA in Cultural Studies. I have been a freelance writer for taz, die tageszeitung in Berlin, covering the Paris fashion shows for the culture section. An editor for the Sunday edition of NZZ in Zurich. I mentored graduate students and lectured fashion theory and concept at the University of the Arts in Basel for many years as well as trend forecasting at ZHdK, University of the Arts in Zurich.
